UIF Registration FAQs
- 01The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) is a statutory fund designed to provide temporary financial relief to workers who lose income due to unemployment, maternity leave, illness, or adoption leave. Employers are legally required to register for UIF and contribute on behalf of their employees. This obligation is governed by the Unemployment Insurance Act No. 63 of 2001. UIF ensures employees receive protection during periods of involuntary income loss, and failure to register can result in penalties, interest, and compliance audits.
- 02Any employer who has employees working more than 24 hours per month must register with UIF. This applies to companies, sole proprietors, NPOs, trusts, and even households that employ domestic workers. The requirement is based on employment hours, not business type or revenue. If you pay even one qualifying employee, UIF registration is mandatory.

- 04UIF contributions equal 2% of the employee's remuneration. • 1% contributed by the employee • 1% contributed by the employer These contributions must be declared monthly via UIF or via SARS EMP201 submissions (if using SARS). UIF is calculated on earnings up to a capped limit which SARS updates periodically.
